Your local Guardian
How long have you been in the industry?
This is my 48th year in the funeral service industry, and I have been the location manager at Boland Funerals in Maroubra for four years. I am the fourth generation in my family to work in the funeral industry, my great niece contributing to the fifth generation in our family to serve the community.
What do you enjoy about your job?
I enjoy being able to listen to families and help them organise a funeral for their loved one. In addition to this, I enjoy being among like-minded, supportive individuals working toward a single goal.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare times?
Being with family; reaffirming the importance they have in my life and always thanking them for their support during those times I have not been there due to the odd hours and interruptive nature of a funeral director’s life. I also enjoy fishing, boating, riding my motorcycle with my wife, touring in our campervan - and the company of good friends.
What’s the most remarkable funeral you’ve ever arranged?
All funerals should be remarkable. That is what we aim for and so often achieve. I have had the privilege of serving all different types of families, from local families to Prime Minister and Governor General families. Except for the setting, the result remains the same.
What charities does Boland Funerals support in your area?
We have supported Legacy, the RSL, local churches, and disability services over many years.
What makes Boland Funerals special?
The people who each play a role in the performance of our funerals: Arrangers, mortuary staff, transfer teams and funeral staff: the celebrants and clergy we work with and the professionals who supply music, booklets and ancillary items that make the event so special for families. The Boland family started this business in good faith to the community. We continue to respect their vision and carry on their commitment to the best of our ability.
